While booking movie tickets on BookMyShow, have you ever come across an icon like the below, that mentions the showtime along with a distinct text that reads ‘PXL Screen’?
If yes, I am sure a question would have come to your mind – what is PXL Screen? What does it mean? The same thing happened with me as well recently. Believe it or not, there are between 2,000 and 7,000 people searching for the meaning of PXL Screen monthly on average in India. So I am not alone in this.
Alright, so without further ado, let us dive right in and understand what is PXL Screen.
What is the meaning of PXL Screen?

PXL Screen is a theatre design or technology introduced by PVR that aims to transform the movie-going experience by powering the cinema hall with features like a laser projection system, Dolby Atmos sound and curved screen. These features make every little detail come alive. Also, as the name suggests, it has an extra-large screen. Simply put, PXL Screen means watching a movie in PVR with an extra-large [XL] experience in form of improved seating, audio-visual quality and screen size.
What are the features of PXL Screen?
PXL Screen comes with the following features to provide a more realistic movie experience:
1. Laser projection – for enhanced imagery/picture quality
2. Bespoke theatre design – for an enhanced experience
3. Giant curved screen – for wide view
4. Next-gen 3D technology – for greater definition
5. Richer sound experience
6. Dolby Atmos sound technology – for 3D moving audio
7. Multiple seating options – for more comfort
In addition to the above, one feature which is often overlooked is that the screen covers the entire wall, unlike the regular theatres where you see some side and the bottom portions left uncovered. While these portions left uncovered are not a problem because most of us have been visiting the regular screens all this while, PXL covering the entire wall gives an altogether different experience.
Also, there is a service button on your armrest. You can get the staff to your seat directly in case you need any help.
What is the total seating capacity in PXL Screen?
340-370 seats are made available in a PXL theatre. This is significantly higher than the capacity of a normal screen that can house between 200 and 250.
What are various seating options available in a PXL Screen?
There are a total of 4 seating options in a PXL screen – Lounger, Prime, Prime Plus and Recliner. There is one row of Lounger which is the closest to the screen. Right above Lounger, there are about 12 rows dedicated to Prime and Prime Plus. Then there are two rows of Recliner, which is farthest from the screen.
What is the pricing for each of the seating options of PXL Screen?
The closer you are to the screen, the higher will be the pricing. Hence, Lounger costs the lowest and Recliner the highest. However, one point to note here is that Lounger costs almost the same as your regular tickets. The cost of Prime, Prime Plus and Recliner tickets is approximately 1.5x, 1.8x and 2.4x of Lounger’s tickets respectively.
Obviously, this may vary from city to city. But yes, this is the usual range.
What is the PVR PXL’s screen size?
A PXL screen is almost the same as a Digital IMAX screen but not as big.

What is the difference between PXL and other technologies like IMAX/4DX/MX4D/Insignia?
One of the major differences is that movies have to be customized to work in IMAX/4DX/MX4D format. Considering PXL has more to do with the interiors of the hall, movies of any type can be played on PXL screens. Insignia theatres, however, come close because they also focus more on the theatre/cinema experience rather than technology. However, Insignia is a 7-star experience.
PVR Playhouse also has more to do with the interior but it is specifically designed for children. IMAX with Laser is similar too, in a way, but has more advanced sound systems.
How many PXL Screens exist in India as of April 2022?
As of today, there are 7 PXL Screens across India. 2 in Mumbai, 1 each in Delhi, Noida, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and Surat.
