It is a well-known fact and the makers of the movie have said that Ponniyin Selvan: 1 is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s book Ponniyin Selvan.
Ponniyin Selvan is a novel published in the 1950s. Although the characters and some events in the Ponniyin Selvan novel are indeed real considering their historical accuracy and records available. However, the events that are mentioned in the novel are fictional to some extent. Kalki Krishnamurthy has clearly mentioned on the first page of the book itself that the novel is a work of fiction. Hence, we conclude that apart from the characters’ names and some events, most of the events described in the Ponniyin Selvan: 1 movie are a work of fiction.
Ponniyin Selvan: 1 movie is divided into 2 parts. The first part of the movie will be centered around Aditya Karikalan (played by Vikram). The 2nd part will be centered around his brother, Raja Raja Chola (Jayaram Ravi) taking over the kingdom and becoming one of the greatest kings of the Indian subcontinent.
