While booking tickets through Fandango or any other online movie ticket booking sites, you would have come across a section within Regal theaters that says ‘RPX’, like shown in the snapshot below:

I am sure a question would have come to your mind – what does RPX mean in movies? Before we decode RPX movie theaters, let me tell you that there are approximately 20,000 searches happening every month in the US alone for the meaning of RPX. So you and I are not alone.
Alright, so let us dive right into this.
What Does RPX Mean?
Simply put, RPX is an acronym for Regal Premium Experience. As the name suggests, it is available only in Regal cinemas and is aimed at providing an enhanced movie-going experience to the viewers.
Quick History of RPX
Regal announced the launch of Regal Premier Experience (RPX) back in 2010. Yes, it is over a decade old! The goal was to provide an experience that was better than the standard theaters but a tad below the IMAX. This was also done to counter competition like Cinemark which had launched its Premium XD technology – Cinemark XD.
What is RPX Movie? Features of RPX Regal
RPX movie theaters boast four major features:
1. Large screens – the screen width can be anywhere between 45 feet to 70 feet wide
2. High-quality sound – RPX theaters are mostly equipped either with Auro 3D or Dolby Atmos sound system
3. Enhanced picture quality – Most of the Regal RPXs are equipped with Barco’s DP4K-32B projector (same as that used in Cinemark in its XD theaters)
4. Leather seats also including recliners
Is RPX 3D or 2D?
Regal Premium Experience comes in both, standard 2D and ReadD 3D. Barco’s projector projects 2D at 60 fps and 3D at 24 or 30 fps.

How Much are the RPX Movie Tickets Priced at?
Considering the premium nature of the experience, you do have to pay higher than the standard experience. I checked the ticket price for a similar movie in the same theater. The RPX experience costs approximately 30% higher than its standard counterpart. 4DX, on the other hand, in the same theater for a different movie costs approximately 15% higher.
These differences could be varied across cities, states, and theaters.
Is RPX Worth it?
Well, RPX movie tickets do come at a slightly higher cost. Hence, the ask is valid. RPX has mostly received positive reviews from viewers. If you haven’t been to an RPX theater before, it should definitely be given a shot. However, there is a considerable difference between an IMAX and RPX. IMAX comes with larger screens, and even better picture and sound quality. You are likely to be disappointed if you have experienced IMAX already.
How many RPX Screens exist in the US as of July 2023?
While this information is not directly available, a quick search on Fandango reveals that there are a total of 92 Regal RPX theaters in the country. With the company on an expanding spree, I won’t be surprised if the number increases rapidly.
